Danimarca: un anno dopo

Sembra ieri ma in realtà è già passato un anno da quando sono arrivato in Danimarca ed è tempo di dare delle valutazioni. Chiarisco subito che molto di quello che dirò è assolutamente personale, e relativo alla mia ancora corta esperienza in terra danese.
Ma come si fa a valutare un posto, una cultura con tutto quello che la circonda? Beh, in verità non credo sia possibile ma cercherò di dare dei punteggi a delle cose che si valutano (io lo faccio) in tutti i posti del mondo in cui si possa andare.

A quanto pare il punteggio medio risulta essere molto alto. Voglio ricordare che i punteggi sono basati completamente su mie esperienze personali in Danimarca ed in altri paesi e non si basano su statistiche reali. Per quanto riguarda dei ranking basati su numeri e statiche volevo segnalare come Copenaghen risulta essere all'undicesimo posto tra le città più vivibili, ma personalmente credo che il valore che si debba dare a queste statistiche sia molto relativo, e che la qualità della vita non si basi solo numeri ma anche dalla personale soddisfazione che si può avere vivendo in un posto piuttosto che in un altro.

Denmark: one year later

Looks like yesterday but one year has already passed since I started living in Denmark, and for that reason I thought is time to give some evaluation. I want to make clear that my evaluation it completely personal and solely based on my, still very short, experience in Denmark.
But how would you evaluate a place, a culture and everything that surrounds it? Well, actually I do not think is possible mainly because, again most of the evaluation are biased from the personal experience and native culture of each person. I will anyway try to give some score to things that people care about (at least I do) when moving from a place (city, country etc.) to another.

Looks like the average score is pretty good. I want you to recall again that these "scores" are based solely on my personal experience and are not based on existing real statistics.
Talking about ranking based on statistics, Copenhagen got the 11th position among the most livable cities in the world. I understand those people work a lot for making those statistics but still I think the best way for deciding which place is the best to live is a very personal thing and cannot be chosen only by means of statistics.

Aggiornamento

Sono passati mesi dall'ultima volta che ho scritto qualcosa dunque mi sembrava giusto dare almeno un veloce aggiornamento. I motivi per i quali non ho scritto sono vari, tra i quali gli impegni di lavoro e la mia pigrizia. Di seguito elencherò velocemente delle cose accadute negli ultimi mesi.

• Assistente in corso Perl più un giorno di lezione tutto per me :)
• Ho iniziato a vivere in un altro appartamento
• Conferenza a Cambridge in microbiologia
• Summer School in Sicilia + visita a casa + 3kg di peso
• Ampliata la conoscenza del cibo e delle birre Danesi (anche se preferisco ancora il vino)
• Ho iniziato ha fare la pizza da zero (due tentativi fino ad ora)

La lista di sopra è fortemente ridotta e ripulita da certi eventi e dettagli che potrebbero disturbare la sensibilità dei lettori... Da ora in poi cercherò di nuovo di scrivere in modo un po' più regolare sul blog.

Update

Almost 4 months has passed since I wrote in this blog. The reasons are different, and among those there are my job and my laziness. Following I will show a short list of the things that happened during the last 4 months.

• Assistant in a Perl course + one lecture by me :)
• Started living in a new flat
• Conference on microbiology in Cambridge at Welcome Trust institute
• Summer School in Sicily + visit family + gained 3kg
• Widen my knowledge of Danish food and beers (I still prefer wine)
• Started making pizza from scratch (2 tests so far)

The list is strongly simplified and some details and events were omitted to preserve the sensitivity of the readers... From now on I will try to update my blog a little bit more frequently.

４ヶ月からこのブログに書きませんでした。本当に忙しいだった、でも少しのらりくらりもしました。したに短いリストを書きました。リストで前の４ヶ月でした事が書いてあります。「I know my Japanese is getting worse and worse everyday. :(

Fine 2010

Anche il 2010 è arrivato alla fine e si parla spesso di bilanci e di prospettive per l'anno che viene. Personalmente non sono abituato a fare il resoconto di quello accaduto durante l'anno perché vedo il passare degli anni come una cosa normale. Ma per questa volta ho deciso di stilare una corta lista degli eventi importanti (sia positivi che negativi) che hanno in qualche modo influenzato la mia vita nel 2010. Ad ogni evento darò anche un punteggio da 1 a 5, dove 5 indica l'assoluta positività dell'evento mentre l'uno indica l'opposto.

• Marzo: a causa di un prof perdo un PhD in Giappone e la mia laurea viene rimandata di 4 mesi -> 1
• Luglio: ottengo la laurea specialistica in Bioinformatica -> 3
• Luglio: trovo subito un lavoro in Giappone in una azienda biotechnologie -> 5
• Agosto: il prof di cui sopra viene rimosso dal suo incarico (indovinate perché) -> 3
• Agosto: l'azienda Giapponese combina un disastro con il mio visto ed ho dovuto dunque rinunciare all'impiego -> 1
• Settembre: ottengo una posizione come PhD alla Technical University of Denmark -> 5
• Dicembre: nasce la mia terza nipotina Alice -> 5

Vista la media dei punteggi bisogna ammettere che il 2010 è andato abbastanza bene :) Bisognerebbe fare anche una lista delle cose da fare nel 2011, ma siccome sono un po' troppe dovrò prendermi ancora un po' di tempo per pensarci.

2010 Ends

2010 will soon be gone and all people talk about how 2010 was and have dreams and expectations for the new coming year. I admit I am not used to look back to the passed year but I also admit that if I do it then yes, I can see differences between different gone years. This time I will write down a short list of the events that influenced my life (both positively and negatively) during 2010. I will also give a score to those events, a score ranging from 1 (extremely negative event) to 5 (extremely positive event).

• March: because of a professor I lost a PhD position in Japan and my graduation has been delayed of 4 months -> 1
• July: I graduate in Bioinformatics -> 3
• July: I found a job in Japan in a biotech company -> 5
• August: the above professor has been removed from his charge (try to guess why) -> 3
• August: the Japanese company where I found the job messed up with my visa and I lost my new job -> 1
• September: I get a position as PhD in Bioinformatics at the Technical University of Denmark -> 5
• December: my third niece Alice is born -> 5

Looking at the average scores, I am happy to admit that 2010 was quite positive after all :) I may also do a list of the things I would like to do in 2011 but it would be too long so I am not sure I will ever do it. Happy new year for now :)

Lavoro...

Diciamo che questa parte non veniva aggiornata da quando ho lavorato in Giappone. Siccome, a quanto mi dicono, ora sono un lavoratore mi pareva giusto scrivere due linee sul mio lavoro e su dove lavoro.
Dalla metà di Novembre lavoro al Centro per l'Analisi di Sequenze Biologiche (per gli amici CBS) al DTU di Copenaghen. In parole (molto povere) analizzerò delle sequenze di genomi di batteri e dovrò utilizzare delle tecniche di informatica (in particolare di Machine Learning) per scovare degli agenti patogeni (e/o non patogeni) all'intero dei suddetti genomi. Il gruppo di cui faccio parte ha come scopo primario l'uso di tecniche informatiche per risolvere problemi di immunologia.
Per non dilungarmi troppo in un post noiosissimo non darò ulteriori dettagli sul mio lavoro, mi fermo dunque subito ed evito di continuare a tediarvi...

My Job

Well, last time I wrote about my job was when I started working in Japan, so I thought it would be fair to write few lines about my new job.
From the middle of November I am working at the Center for Biological Sequence Analysis at DTU in Copenhagen. In very few words, I will analyze bacteria genomes and use computer science techniques (mainly Machine Learning) to find (and/or predict) pathogens (and/or non pathogens) inside the above genomes. The group I belong to has as it's main task, the application of bioinformatic techniques to solve problems related to immunology.
Since it would to long to give other details, and since I do not want you to fall asleep while you are reading, I decided that for this post is enough.... :D

Aiuto per scrivere in Inglese

Negli ultimi giorni sto scrivendo un articolo in Inglese ed in questo caso devo cercare di ampliare il mio vocabolario. Quando si scrive qualcosa di mediamente lungo e tecnico è bene avere una buona padronanza della lingua facendo attenzione ad utilizzare molto i sinonimi in modo da non rendere noiosa la lettura di quello che si è scritto. Ho usato un vocabolario dei sinonimi anche per scrivere la tesi in Italiano.
Per scrivere l'articolo in Inglese sto utilizzando un dizionario online molto completo nel quale si possono trovare molti sinonimi di sostantivi e verbi. Il dizionario si chiama THESAURUS e credo sia il migliore dizionario online per la lingua Inglese. Un altro problema che si può avere quando si scrive in una lingua che non sia la nostra lingua madre è la coniugazione dei verbi. Seppure la coniugazione dei verbi in Inglese non sia particolarmente complicata se paragonata all'Italiano o al Giapponese può sempre capitare di avere problemi nel riconoscere dei verbi irregolari. La soluzione consiste nell'utilizzare un tool online per la coniugazione automatica dei verbi. Il sito si chiamava REVERSO e supporta la lingua Inglese, Spagnolo, Tedesco e Francese.

Help for writing in English

In these days I started writing a paper in English and in this case I need to widen my English dictionary. Writing something technical which starts becoming long is good to have a nice knowledge of the language you are using, paying attention in using words and using synonyms, avoing the readed to get bored while reading. I used an online synonym dictionary for writing my thesis in Italian.
Writing the article I am using an English online dictionary called THESAURUS, which I think is one of best online English dictionary. Another difficulty in writing and talking in a language different from your own mother tongue is the verbs conjugation. Even if English verbs conjugation is simple if compared to Italian or Japanese verbs, still it can happen to have trouble conjugating irregular verbs. The online tool I'm using is called REVERSO and it does the automatic conjugation of verbs in English, German, Spanish and French language.
Well, I hope it could be useful to somebody...

最近はScientific　Paperを書いています。使って言葉は英語です。長い記事書くの時で言葉を分からなければたくさん問題があります「ぜひ私は日本語を上手じゃありません　:-(　」。私の論文の言葉はイタリア語ですけどその時で同義語の辞書を使いました。そのツールを使わなければ読む事が詰まらないになります。今はオンラインの英語辞書と動詞のツールを使っています。辞書の名前はTHESAURUSです。それは本当にいい英語辞書です。動詞のツールはREVERSOです。

Terremoto

La scorsa Domenica e questa mattina alle 5 ci sono state delle forti scosse di terremoto che hanno scosso tutto il Giappone centrale. Quella di questa mattina aveva la magnitudo 6.5, e visto che l' epicento era a soli 20km dalla costa di Shizuoka gli effetti sono stati maggiori.
Io sono stato svegliato dalla scossa anche se nella prefettura di Kanagawa non ci sono stati problemi. Nella prefettura di shizuoka una autostrada è stata chiusa perché distrutta in certi tratti dal sisma. Ci sono anche stati un morto e circa 80 feriti, tutti nella prefettura di Shizuoka.
Devo dire anche per me è stato impressionante, date che, pur abitando al piano terra ho le pareti letteralmente smuoversi.
Sinceramente credo che a questa scossa ne seguiranno altre visto che a quanto parte anche i Giapponesi non sentivano scosse così forti nell' area del Kanto.

Earthquake

Last Sunday night and last morning at 5 there were erathquake which shaked the entire area of Kanto and were also felt in the northen prefectures of Kanto. The magnitude of the last quake was 6.5 and add stronger effect then the one happened on Sunday because it was closer to the Japanese costs. In particulary it happened at a dept of 20km in front of Shizuoka's cost.
In Shizuoka one highway has been closed because it has been partially damaged by the earthquake. Still in Shizuoka prefecutre, one person died and around 80 people were injured.
Personally I was waken by the earthquake and even if I live on the first floor I could the walls of my room shaking. I personally think that there will be other earthquakes in these period, also because has been a really long time since Kanto area had such strong earthquakes.

日曜日の夜と昨日の朝に地震がありました。昨日の朝の地震は日曜日のよりも強かったけどマグニチュードは6.5でした。なぜなら震源地が日曜日のよりも浅かったからです。静岡県で道路を被害有りました、そして道路で使う事が打ち切りました。
月曜日の地震は自分を起きた。僕は一回で住むだけど私の部屋は本当に強く揺るぎました。部屋の壁はもすぐ転ぶを見たかった。関東でその強い地震をあまりありますだから先週にも地震あるだと思います。

Pitagora Switch

Pitagora Suichi (ピタゴラスイッチ)

Ogni mattina, quando mi alzo per andare a lavoro, mentre mi preparo accendo la televisione. La mattina ci sono molti programmi per bambini, e devo anche dire grazie perché ascoltando passivamente ho imparato anche qualche parolina. Alle 8 invece su NHK iniziano gli interemezzi di "Pitagora Switch"  (ピタゴラスイッチ). Sono dei piccolli video nei quali vengono mostrati degli effetti domino utilizzando degli oggetti che tutti abbiamo normalmente in casa. Delle cose simili le ho anche viste in alcuni episodi di "Tom e Jerry" (e non solo) ed anche nei Goonies se ne vede uno semplice.
Beh, mi sa che quando ho tempo ne dovrò fare uno anch' io.

Every morning while I am preparing to go to work I turn on the tv. In the morning there many tv programs for kids, and I must also be grateful to them because I could also learn some word by passively listening to them. At 8 on HTK tv channel, the "Pitagora Switch" short videos start. Those video show little domino effects realized by using simple things that everyone can easily find at is own place. I seen some similar things also in some episode of "Tom And Jerry" (and other cartoons) and also in the Goonies you can see a simple one.
Well, I guess when I will have some spare time I should try to build one of those dominos by myself.

毎日朝仕事へ行けば服を着ていますとテレビをつける。朝テレビでたくさん子供の番組があります。その番組聞けば時々新しいの名詞習いますだから良いです。８時NHKでピタゴラスイッチ始まります。その番組は短いのドミノ動画見せています。
バラバラ映画でとかアニメでとかの中でそのビデオの同じようなあります。たとえばＴｈｅＧｏｏｎｉｅｓとＴｏｍＡｎｄＪｅｒｒｙの中に同じような動画見た事があります。
じゃあ、何時か時間が有ればピタゴラスイッチの同じようなドミノを作りたい。。。

Golden Week - Nagoia「名古屋」

La terza città che ho visitato durante la Golden Week è stata Nagoia. Questa città è il capoluogo della prefettura di Aichi ed è la quarta città più grande del Giappone.
A Nagoya sono andato a visitare un mio amico Giapponese e dunque sono stato a casa sua con la sua famiglia. La casa era davvero bella, era stata costruita circa 90 anni fa e dunque è una tradizionale casa Giapponese, e comprendeva ovviamente anche un grande giardino in stile Giapponese.
Purtroppo (come è successo anche ad Hiroshima) mentre mi trovavo a Nagoia pioveva devvero tanto e dunque non potuto vedere tante cose. Siamo comunque andati a visitare il il castello di Nagoya, costruito nel 1612 e restaurato nel 1959. E' stata una esperienza molto bella non solo per i posti che ho visto ma anche per le persone che ho conosciuto, tra le quali i componenti la famiglia del mio amico. Sono stati gentilissimi e mi hanno sempre fatto sentire a casa.
A Nagoia ho inoltre mangiato benissimo, ed ho avuto modo di mangiare mizonikomiudon, che viene fatto solo a Nagoia, ma su questo argormento scriverò un piccolo post più avanti.

Golden Week - Nagoya「名古屋」

The 3rd city I visited during the Golden Week was Nagoya. It is the main city in the Aichi prefecture and the 4th biggest city in Japan. I went there to visit one of my Japanese friends and so I stayed at his place with his family during my stay in Nagoya. His family house was really pretty, it has been built around 90 years ago, it is a typical Japanese house and also has a Japanese style garden.
Same as when I went to Hiroshima, it was raining really hard and so I could not see so many things but I still wanted to go to see the Nagoya castle. The castle has been built in 1612 and restructured in 1956. Despite the rain the trip was very nice both because of the places I seen and the people I known. My friend's family was really nice to me and while I at their place I always felt at home.
In Nagoya I also had the chance to eat the mizonikoudon which is cooked only in Nagoya and it's really tasty, but I will wright another post about it later.

ゴルデンウィーク　「名古屋」

名古屋は日本の三番の大きいの町です。日本で名古屋市は愛知県であります。あの町へ私の日本人の友達を会いに来ました。友達の家で止まりましたと彼の家族を会いました、あの家本当に古かったくてきれいなかった。あの家は九十年前ぐらい建ちました。
あの時でたくさん雨を降っていましただから少しの所に行ったことがありました。ざんえんけど名古屋城に行った。
あの建物は１６１２で建ちましたと１９５６で繕いましたけどまだきれいなの建物です。
名古屋で本当に楽しかっただってたくん優しいの人会いましたと美味しいの食べ物食べました。
名古屋で味噌煮込み饂飩食べて見ましたけど後でこの事に一つのポスト書きます

Golden Week: [広島]

Dopo un paio di giorni ad Osaka mi spostato verso Hiroshima. Sono partito la mattina del 3 Maggio per raggiungere la stazione Hiroshima verso le quattro del pomeriggio. Purtroppo la tappa di Hiroshima non è stata molto felice, principalmente a causa del brutto tempo. A causa del brutto tempo infatti non sono riuscito ad andare a Miyajima, che è una delle tappe più importanti per chi si reca ad Hiroshima.
Sono comunque andato al museo riguardante il bombardamento atomico e a vedere la statua dedicata a Sadako Sasaki, la bimba che è morta di Leucemia qualche anno dopo l' esplosione a causa dell' effetto delle radiazioni. La bambina credendo alla leggenda Giapponese secondo la quale se si fanno 1000 origami di ucceli, alla persona che li ha fatti viene esaudito un desiderio, ha continuato a fare degli origami fino alla sua morte.
Sono anche riuscito a mangiare l' Okonomiyaki di Hiroshima che differenza di quello di Osaka contiene anche degli spaghetti di soia ed al suo interno vi può essere anche carne e pesce.
Per quanto riguarda Miyajima, l' ho potuta vedere solo da lontano perché quando sono arrivato giusto per prendere il battello che porta all' isola, la pioggia è aumentata di molto ed allora ho deciso di rinunciare.

Golden Week: [広島]

After a couple of days in Osaka I moved to Hiroshima. I got into the bus to Hiroshira around 7 in the morning and I got in Hiroshima around 4pm. I must say that the trip was not perfect beause of the terrible weather. I staied almost two days and I could see many things despite the short time. I seen the "Atomic Dome" museum, which is about the atomic bombing in Hiroshima. I also went seen the statue of Sadako Sasaki. Sasaki was a girl who died of leucemy because of the effect of the atomic bomb radiations. Her story is famous because the little girl, believing on a Japanese legend which states that if you make 1000 paper crane then one of your desires will become true. The girl wanted to get better from her sickness so she started making paper cranes while she was ospitalized, and she continued making it until her dead. The statue is showing a little girl holding a big paper crane in her hands.
About Miyajima, I seen it only from far because when I reacher the boat that takes to the highland, it started raining very strong and so I decided not to go.
I also had the chance to eat the Hiroshima Okonomiyaki which is different from the Osaka one, even if I must admit that both are very delicious.

Golden Week - Osaka [大阪]

La sera del primo di Maggio, dopo avere preparato le valigie, decidiamo di cenare prima di prendere il Treno per Shinjuku. Il viaggio non è iniziato nel migliore dei modi, visto che ci siamo accorti quando eravamo vicini a Shinjuku che l' autobus per Osaka partiva in realtà da Yokohama.
Bene...niente panico, cambiamo subito treno e ci dirigiamo verso Yokohama. Siamo riusciti ad arrivare giusto in tempo per l' inizio del check in. Siamo partiti verso mezzanotte da Yokohama ed a mezzogiorno del giorno sucessivo eravamo ancora a Kioto ed allora abbiamo deciso scendere dall' autobus e prendere il treno per Osaka. Siamo dunque arrivati ad Osaka verso l' 13:00 del 2 Maggio quando l' arrivo ad Osaka era previsto per le 7 di mattina. La causa è semplice da intuire, era il fine settimana, ma soprattutto era l' inizio della golden week, dunque le autostrade erano eccessimante affollate.
Arrivati ad Osaka abbiamo preso un taxi che ci ha portato al capsule hotel nel quale abbiamo dormito per le prime due notti. Il quartire dove si trovava il capsule hotel era molto vicino alla stazione centrale di Osaka ed anche molto vivace e movimentato. Quando si arriva ad Osaka ci si rende subito conto che la gente é generalmente più rilassata rispetto alla gente di Tokio, anche se bisogna ammettere che Osaka è anch' essa molto movimentata e frenetica.
Le due sere in cui sono stato ad Osaka siamo andati in giro per le aree vicine ad Osaka. Siamo andati ad esempio a Dotonbori e Namba, famosi per i negozi di Takoyaki e credo anche per i ristoranti in cui servono il fugu (pesce palla). Una delle cose di cui mi vergogno è di non essere stato al castello di Osaka, non sono potuto andare per una serie di circostanze tra le quali il mio viaggio ad Hiroshima.
La gente ad Osaka è generalmente più amichevole e sorridente rispetto a Tokio, ma in realtà credo che questa sia una caratteristica che accomuna tutta la gente del Kanto. Riguardo al capsule hotel è stato abbastanza comodo, ma scriverò comunque un post apposta su questo argomento più avanti.

Golden Week - Osaka [大阪]

The night of May the first, after we prepared everything we needed for the trip, we went to have dinner. After we catched the train to go Shinjuku, but when we where close to Shinjuku we realized that the bus station where we had to go was in Yokohama and not in Shinjuku. Well, I tried to be calm and so we soon changed the train and took the one directed to Yokohama. In the end we arrived just in time for the check in. We left Yokohama around midnight and at noon we were still in Kyoto. The motorway was really busy because of the golden week, and so we decided to get off of the bus in Kyoto and go to Osaka by train. The bus was supposed to arrive in Osaka at 7am but we arrived in Osaka around 1pm.
Once we arrived in Osaka we soon took a taxi to go the capsule hotel we previously booked. The place was very close to the station and quite busy, with lots of shops, karaoke and other  entertainement places. In Osaka I soon noticed how the people looks more relaxed and friendly even though Osaka itself is quite busy.
The two nights I staied in Osaka I went to see the places close to the main city. I went to Dotonbori and Namba, famous for the Takoyaki shop and for the restaurants in which you can eat Fugo (Ball Fish). I really regret that I did not visit Osaka castle but because of a series of circumstances I could not do it.
One thing I would like to remark is that Osaka people, and more in general, the people from Kanto, looks more relaxed, open and friendly compared to the busy people living in Tokyo. About the capsule hotel...well it was comfortable enough but I will talk about it later.

Golden Week (ゴールデンウィーク) [Riassunto]

Alla fine sono tornato dalle mie vacanze e tristemente si ritorna a lavoro. La golden week (ゴールデンウィーク) è un periodo dell' anno, compreso tra la fine di Aprile e l' inizio di Maggio, nel quale cadono un serie feste nazionali Giapponesi e dunque si ha la possibilità di avere un periodo di vacanza relativamente lungo.
Nel mio caso ho avuto circa dieci di ferie, utilizzando soltanto uno dei miei quindici giorni di ferie pagate. Durante la golden week ho visitato Osaka (大阪), Hiroshima (広島) e Nagoya (名古屋). La mappa da una idea del percorso e dei mezzi che ho utilizzato per viaggire. A parte la il traffico in autostrada ed il fatto che tutti gli alberghi fossero al completo (come al solito non mi sono prodigato di prenotare almeno due mesi prima), devo dire che è stato davvero un bel periodo di vacanza.
In seguito scriverò dei post in cui parlerò singolarmente dei posti che ho visitato delle cose che ho mangiato e delle persone che ho incontrato.
Il primo giorno di lavoro dopo il ritorno (Venerdì) è stato davvero duro, ma adesso nella mia scrivania ho molte cose che mi ricordano la mia vacanza e che mi danno possibilità di pensare ad altri posti che vorrei visitare.

Golden Week (ゴールデンウィーク)

Finally I had to go back to work after the relaxing period I had for dunring the Golden Week's holidays. The Golden Week (ゴールデンウィーク) is a period of the year, between the end of April and the start of May, in which falls many Japanese national holidays and for that reason people have the chance to have a relatively long period of consecutive holidays.
In my case I had around 10 days of holidays (the longest should be around 15 days) using only one of 15 paied holidays. During the trip I visited Osaka (大阪), Hiroshima (広島) e Nagoya (名古屋).The map I made gives an idea of the trip and how did I moved between the places I visited. Despite the very busy highway and the fact that everywhere was full of people, it was a very nice trip.
Later I write specific posts about the places I visited, the things I seen, the food I ate and the people I met. The first the at work after the holidays (Friday, May the 8th) was really hard, but now my desk is full of things that remember me the nice trip I had and let thing about new places I would like to visit in the holiday period (obviously before the next golden week).

Il Mio Lavoro (Aggiornamento 2)

E' passato un pò di tempo dall' ultima volta in cui ho parlato del mio lavoro. Negli ultimi due mesi è stato un pò noioso perché in ufficio stiamo rinnovando completamente i sistemi sui quali lavoriamo.
Scrivo questo post semplicemente per una notizia che qualche mese  fa mi sarebbe sembrata assurda, ma che oggi non mi impressiona nemmeno.
La settimana scorsa mi è stato comunicato che inizierò a lavorare sul modello predittivo per il Mandarino (Cinese), il tutto continuando ovviamente a lavorare sul Tedesco. Il Mandarino, come il Cantonese ed Tailandese (per fare qualche esempio...) è una lingua che comprede un sistema di toni. In parole povere, ad esempio la sillaba "ma" può essere pronunciata con quattro toni differenti (lo stesso vale per tutte le altre sillabe) ed avere (ovviamente) signicati totalmente diversi.
In pratica questo significa che se non hai una profonda conscenza della lingua, almeno un paio di "ma" suoneranno esattamente allo stesso modo con il risultato che non ci capisci un tubo (il Tailandese ha sette toni differenti...). Tutto questo ovviamente non sarebbe un problema se non per il fatto che dovrò ascoltare delle registrazioni per cercare di identificare perché il modello predittivo presenta un dato problema (Error Pattern Analysis).
Beh, in qualche modo sono comunque contento, almeno arriva qualcosa di nuovo, e sono sicuro che ci sarà da ridere al momento di fare la error pattern analysis, se poi aggiungi che imparerò a contare in Cinese...

My Job (Update 2)

Has been a while since last time I talked about my job, and today I am going to give you a news that a couple of months ago I would have been shocked to hear.
Last week has been notified to me that from May I will be working on the predictive model for the Mandarin (Chinese) language, obviously still taking care of the German language model too. Same as Thai and Cantonese (Chinese) languages, Mandarin has a system of tones in the pronunciation of the syllables. To give you an example, the syllable "ma" can be pronunced with four different tones, and the meaning will be always different.Pratically speaking, if you do not have a deep knowledge of the language (and had listened to it for a looooong time), maybe a couple of the four "ma" will have same sound for you. This would not be a problem if not for the fact that I will have to listen to the recorded speeches that we use to train the models, in order to find out why the model his showing a particular problem (error pattern analysis - EPA).
Well, I am happy anyway because at least I am going to start something new, and I am sure that will be somehow funny at the moment when I will start doing the EPA, if then you also know that I will learn at least how to count in Mandarin.....

Piccolo Mondo

Qualche settimana fa mi sono incontrato con una mia amica Siciliana, ex collega di quando studiavo a Catania. Ci siamo entrambi ritrovati nella terra del Sol Levante dopo aver perso le tracce l' uno dell' altro per circa 5 anni. I motivi che ci hanno portato qui sono diversi, anche se entrambi ci siamo specializzati nella stessa area dell' informatica. Ormai non sorprende più vedere quanto in realtà il mondo sia piccolo, e non è la prima che mi accadono cose del genere. Per la prima volta da quando mi trovo qua ho risentito il dialetto Siciliano parlato on massima naturalezza, ed ovviamente non perso l' occasione per riutilizzare la mia lingua madre.
Come se non bastasse la stessa sera parlo su skype con una mia amica Indiana, ex collega all' Università di Trento, che ora sta facendo il dottorato in nord Europa. Mi ha detto che parteciperà ad una summer school di bioinformatica in Sicilia il cui nome è "Lipari School of Bioinformatics".
Nulla di strano, se non fosse per il fatto che conosco benissimo quella summer school visto che è organizzata dal gruppo di ricerca di bioinformatica dell' Università di Catania con il quale ho lavorato per la tesi della laurea triennale.
Che altro dire...il mondo è davvero piccolo.

Small World

Few weeks ago I met one Sicilian friend, who like me is living and working in Japan. She was my colleghe at the Catania University and we did not know about each since 5 years. The reasons that took us to Japan are different, and was very nice and funny to have dinner and have a relaxed conversation using our mother tougue (Sicilian Language).
As it would have not been enough proves of how small the world can be, in the same night when I came back home I talked on skype one Indian friend who was my colleghe at the University of Trento and that now is studying in Phd course in the north of Europe. She told me that she is going to apply for a summer school in Sicily which name is "Lipari School on Bioinformatics". Nothing surprising but the fact that I know very good that summer school since it is organized by the group of researchers I worked with for the final work for my Bachelor dissertation in Catania.
What else should I say...the world is really small.

Tempesta...

Questo fine settimana il tempo è stato davvero bello e le temperature si sono alzate. Venerdì abbiamo avuto la cena a tema Messicano e ieri sono andato con degli amici all' acquario di Shinagawa.
Dopo l' acquario siamo andati a cena in un ristorante Cinese a Shibuya e devo dire che non è stato niente male. Oggi avevo programmato di andare a vedere la maratona di Tochio ma il tempo è davvero terribile. In pratica fuori c'è una tempesta ed è la prima che vedo da quando vivo in Giappone. A quanto pare comunque dovrò abituarmi alle tempeste visto che d' estate sono all' ordine del giorno.

Storm...

This weekend me and my friends organized dinner in which we cooked tacos and nachos. It was very nice and there were also many people. Yesterday I went with some friend to visit the aquarium in shinagawa and I could take some nice picture too.
Today me and one friend wanted to go to see the marathon in Tokio but this moning we found out that there was a storm outside so we sadly decided to stay in Atsugi.
The storm was quite strong in Atsugi and in many areas of Japan was stronger. My friend said is better I get used to it because during summer there will stronger and more frequent storms.
Now I miss the Sicilian weather...

Ristorante Primo

Un paio di mesi fa mi trovavo nella prefettura di Saitama per trovare una amica. La sera siamo andati a mangiare in un ristorante il cui nome era Primo. Primo è il nome di una catena di ristoranti Italiani che sembra essere presente solo nella prefettura di Saitama.
Con mia sorpresa devo dire che abbiamo mangiato molto bene e che il prezzo è stato davvero contenuto se paragonato a quello che mediamente si paga in Giappone per mangiare Italiano (o pseudo-Italiano).
Per fare un esempio di cose che ormai si vedono raramente anche in Italia, quando ci hanno servito la pasta è arrivata anche una cameriera con un carrello con sopra una forma di Grana Padano. La cameriera ha estratto il grana dalla forma con l' apposito strumento e poi ce lo ha servito pronto per essere messo sulla pasta o essere mangiato.
La cosa che però mi ha più sorpreso è che avevano la birra Pedavena. La birra pedavena è una birra  Veneta (di Pedavena, vicino Belluno e non Trentina come qualche Trentino potrebbe pensare) e devo dire che non l' ho mai bevuta. L' unica volta che l' ho vista è stato in un bar in via Maccani a Trento (per Apo: è vicino al Poli, nel bar tra il benzinaio e la scorciatoia che porta a casa tua).
La birra non era niente di che ma ho davvero dovuto prenderla solo per la soddisfazione di bere qualcosa di Italiano che è difficile trovare anche in Italia.
Concludendo devo dire che abbiamo mangiato davvero bene spendendo poco, ed è un peccato che questa catena di ristoranti si trovi solo nell' area di Saitama.

Restaurant Primo

Around two month ago I was in Saitama prefecture to visit one friend. We went to have dinner in an Italian restaurant which name is Primo. Primo is restaurants chain that is present present only in Saitama prefecture. I must say that we had a very nice meal without spending too much money.
The mood was very nice and when they served the pasta the waitres came with a little cart with inside a Grana Padano Forma, and she got the fresh cheese and gave it to us ready to be put on the pasta.
Another interesting thing is that I found an Italian beer called Pedavena which is present only in the north of Italy and is not so popular in Italy. It was the first time I tried that beer, and I must say it was not that good (this explains why is not popular), but I had to get because I had the chance to try something Italian in Japan that I never tried in Italy and maybe I will never do it.
To conclude we had a nice meal and we did not pay that much, so I suggest you, if you go around Saitama and you want to eat Italian, to look for a Primo restaurant.

Cioccolatini!!!!

Ieri era San Valentino, ed in Giappone le usanze sono molto differenti rispetto a quelle occidentali. Nel giorno di San Valentino in Giappone le ragazze donano dei cioccolatini agli uomini. Il doto non deve necessariamente arrivare dalla fidanzata, ma può arrivare da altre ragazze che vogliono comunque mostrare un certo affetto nei tuoi confronti.
Avevo già una idea riguardo alle persone che mi avrebbero dato dei cioccolatini, ma ho avuto anche alcune   sorprese.
A lavoro le colleghe mi anno donato un sacchettino con molti tipi di cioccolatini dentro, tra i quali anche i Ferrero Rocher. La sorpresa più è stata però quando verso l' una del pomeriggio qualcuno ha suonato alla porta. Aperta la porta ho trovato il postino che chiedeva di me e che reggeva due pacchi. Firmate le due ricevute e presi i pacchi sono rientrato ed ho iniziato a controllare gli indirizzi. Il primo è stato facile da identificare dato che era da parte di una mia amica che ora lavora in Inghilterra. Il secondo ha richiesto circa 30 secondi in più visto l' indirizzo era in Giapponese.
Il secondo pacco mi è stato inviato da una ragazza ed un bambino che ho conosciuto la prima volta che sono venuto in Giappone. Oltre ai cioccolatini vi erano all' interno due lettere (ovviamente in Giapponese) che, con mia grande soddisfazione, sono riuscito a leggere senza molte difficoltà. Quest' ultimo pacco conteneva inoltre i cioccolati più originali che ho ricevuto, essendo dei cioccolatini dei pokemon proddotti (dalla Meiji) apposta per il giorno di San Valentino.
Ora non mi resta che fare attenzione a non mangiarne troppi e dovrò inoltre iniziare calcolare quante caramelle dovrò comprare, visto che in Giappone a inizio Marzo si celebra una specie di festa delle donne, ed in questo caso sono gli uomini ad inviare delle caramelle alle donne.

Chocolates!!!!

Yesterday was Valentine's day, and in Japan, woman are used to donate chocolates to men.  It does not mean that each girl which sends chocolates to a man, loves that man, but it can also be a simple way to show the affect for that person.
In my case, I was almost sure about some people who would have give chocolate, but in some case they were quite unespected. The first case was at work when five of my cooworkers gave a cholocates as greeting. The second case was really unespected and it was when around one pm someone rang on my door. When I open the door I seen the postman olding two boxes and looking for me. After I got the boxes I soon came back in checking from who does boxes has been sent. The first one was from one of my friend that is working in England. The second one was the most unespected, and was sent by a girl and a kid that I known the first time I came to Japan. The box also containd two letters and the most original chocolate I had ever recieved. The chocolates are pokemon chocolates and they produced in purpose for the Valentine's day.
Now I only need to be careful not to eat too many chocolates and I should start estimating how candies I will need to buy until March, since in that months there will a celebration in which men gives candies to women.

Studio del Giapponese (readthekanji.com)

Sono in Giappone da 3 mesi e purtroppo non so parlare ancora Giapponese. Beh, in realtà riesco bene a comunicare con le persone e riesco a completare un discorso anche se relativamente semplice. Uno dei motivi sta nel fatto che solitamente i Giapponesicercano di comunicare con me in Inglese (anche nei casi in cui lo conosco meno di quanto io conosca il Giapponese).
La frase di sopra serve per darvi una idea di quanto il popolo Giapponese si sforzi di fare sentire a proprio agio le persone straniere, e di conseguenza pensano che rispondermi in Inglese (anche se io sto chiedendo usando correttamente il Giapponese) possa farsi sentire più a mio agio.
A parte la considerazione personale di sopra...torno all' agomento principale del post...che è lo studio dei Kanji. Da quando sono qui ho iniziato a studiare piano piano i kanji aiutandomi inizialmente con dei software sull' iphone. Adesso riesco a riconoscere circa 130 kanji (uno goccia nello sconfinato oceano dei kanji) e circa 50 riesco a scriverli senza dovere prima rivederli.
Una delle difficoltà principali nella lettura dei kanji è dovuta al fatto che i Giapponesi li hanno "importato" dalla Cina circa 500 anni fa, dandogli una nuova pronuncia e soprattutto mantenendo nella maggior parte dei casi anche quella cinese. Come risultato si ottiene dunque che un Kanji ha quasi sempre più di una pronuncia (in certi casi anche 10) e dunque mi capita spesso di riconosce (o meglio intuire) il significato di data una coppia di kanji ma di non essere capace di leggerli. Questa cosa non deve impressionare visto che capita anche agli stessi Giapponesi.
In questo post voglio consigliare uno strumento a mio avviso molto utile per lo studio dei Kanji, il cui nome è readthekanji.com. readthekanji è un sito web nel quale potete testare la vostra conoscenza dei kanji con la possibilità di impostare il livello JLPT al quale pensate di potere concorrere. Il sito mostra delle frasi in Giapponese (hiragana/katakana/kanji), e vi chiede di scrivere il furigana (oppure il romaji) del kanji evidenziato nella frase principale.
Fare questi esercizi risulta molto utile non solo per memorizzare le varie pronuncie e significati che i kanji possono assumere, ma aiuta anche ad ampliare il proprio vocabolario Giapponese.
Ovviamente dovete utilizzarlo solo dopo che avete studiato qualche kanji (ricordo che il livello JLPT4, è il più basso e richiede la conoscenza di circa 100 kanji). Quando dico studiare, nel mio caso intendo: sedersi, prendere un kanji e provare a scriverlo per almeno un paio di righe di quaderno, in modo da memorizzarlo visivamente e ricordarne il significato.

Studying Japanese (readthekanji.com)

I am in Japan since 3 months, and obviously I cannot speak Japanese yet, but I can say more things, I can read and write some kanji and I can usually understand what people are talking about. About the kanji, the reason why they are very difficult is mainly because they can have many different pronunciations. This happens because Japanese imported the ideograms from China around 500 years ago and they changed the pronunciations but in the meantime they also kept the Chinese pronunciation. The result of this is that frequently I can understand the meaning of a couple of kanji together, but I do not know how to read them(this also happens sometimes to Japanese people).
I mainly study kanji using a software I installed on my iphone, but today I want to suggest you another usefull tool for learning kanjis. I guess it could also be usefull to Japanese people who wants to test their knowledge of kanjis. The tool is actually a website called readthekanji.com, in which you can test your knowledge of kanjis chosing the jlpt level you think you belong to. The test consists in writing the furigana (or romanji) of a kanji (or couple or triple of kanjis) highlighted in a sentence written in Japanese language.
This website can be very useful to memorize the different pronunciations of kanjis, but also to enlarge your personal Japanese vocabulary.
What else...I hope the website would be usefull to someone of you reading...

Buon Anno Nuovo 2009 (あけましておめでとうございます)

Un altro anno è andato via e questa è la prima volta che non passo il Capodanno in Sicilia. Beh, devo dire che sono molto contento visto che ho aspettato l' arrivo del nuovo anno in Giappone.
Il Giappone segue l' oroscopo Cinese, dunque il 2009 è l' anno della mucca. Le mucche si vedevano ovunque, nei negozi, nelle cartoline alla televisione...
La vigilia l' ho passata con dei miei amici ad Asakusa, aspettando di vedere la cerimonia per l' inzio del nuovo hanno al tempio buddista Sensoji. La gente era davvero tantissima, la fila per entrare, già alle 10 di sera (il tempio apriva a mezzanotte) arrivava sulla strada principale di Asakusa, e le forze dell' ordine erano davvero tantissime.
L' attesa è stata lunga ed anche un pò dura visto il freddo che si faceva sentire nonostante fossimo circondati da tantisime persone. Dopo essere entrati a tirare la monetina siamo andati a vedere le persone che suonano la capana situata vicino al tempio.
Beh devo dire che è stato bello ed è stata ovviamente una esperienza unica. E' sempre interessante vedere quanto il Giappone sia diferente dall' Italia e dall' Occidente in generale. Ovviamente nei quartieri di Shibuya e Shinjuku la celebrazione è stata molto più mondana ed è quella che viene solitamente mostrata in tv. Beh...ora aspettiamo di vedere dove passerò la prossima vigilia di Capodanno.

Happy New Year

Another year is gone, and this the New Year Eve was very nice beacuse I was in Japan. I waited for the new year to come with some friends in Asakusa, waiting to enter Sansouji, a buddist temple in Asakusa. There were so many people waiting to enter the temple, which opened the doors at midnight, and the queue was such long that it wa already reaching the main street of Asakusa. To wait was a little hard also because of the cold weather, but in the end we could enter and throw our coin and prey(just few second beconds because it was really too busy).
After the temple we went to see the people ringing the big buddist bell, which is located close to the Sansouji temple.
Well, was very interesting to see how is different the way to wait for the new year in Italian and Japan. Obviously in Shibuya and Shinjuku there were less traditional way of waiting and the images we see in Italian tv abotut Japan waiting for the new year are usually from Shibuya.
By the way, let start the new year now...

Le terme di Hakone (箱根町)

Hakone è un paesino circondato dalle montagne nella prefettura di Kanagawa. Principalmente la sua popolarità è dovuta alle tantissime terme naturali che vi si possono trovare, grazie alla vicinanza del monte Fuji. Hakone comprende anche un lago circodato dalle montagne ed i paesaggi che si riescono apprezzare sono spettacolari. Se a questa cartolina aggiungete il monte Fuji coperto dalla neve avete il ritratto completo.

Lo scorso Venerdì sono andato andato ad Hakone per visitare una delle tante onsen, e con me sono anche venuti Andrea, Jenny ed altri amici Giapponesi. L' unica nota negativa è stato il fatto che siamo arrivati lì nel tardo pomeriggio e dunque non abbiamo potuto apprezzare i panorami mozzafiato. Le terme sono state a dir poco fantastiche ed abbastanza economiche. Conto di tornarci al più presto, ma questa vorrei rimanerci lmeno un fine settimana intero.

The Hakone Onsens

Hakone is a small town surrounded by mountains in the Kanagawa prefecture. It famous mainly for the high number of hotsprings due to the nearby mount Fuji. The panorama you can appreciate from there are just wonderful and is not rare to find an onsen whith nice views of the Fuji mount.
Last Friday I went to hakone with Andrea, Jenny and other Japanese friends to visit an onsen, and the only bad thing was that we got there in the late afternoon so we could not appreate the landscapes. The onsen was just wonderful and cheap too. I am planning to go there again as soon as possible and this time I would like to stay an entire week end.
