The Hakone Onsens

Hakone is a small town surrounded by mountains in the Kanagawa prefecture. It famous mainly for the high number of hotsprings due to the nearby mount Fuji. The panorama you can appreciate from there are just wonderful and is not rare to find an onsen whith nice views of the Fuji mount.
Last Friday I went to hakone with Andrea, Jenny and other Japanese friends to visit an onsen, and the only bad thing was that we got there in the late afternoon so we could not appreate the landscapes. The onsen was just wonderful and cheap too. I am planning to go there again as soon as possible and this time I would like to stay an entire week end.

This morning around 10am (Italian time), my second niece Desirè was born. Yes...I am uncle for the second time. The mum and the new born are healthy, and Desirè's weight is 3,45Kg. This is the first case in which I regret I am in Japan, just because I am to far to jump and go to see my new niece.
Well...I stop giving my welcome to the lovely Desirè in this world and saying 'omedetou' to Nino and Simona and Gaia (which now has got a little sister), and to me since I am uncle for the second time.

Dentisti: Italia VS Giappone

Dental Clinic: Italy VS Japan

In these days I needed to go to a dentist because one of my teeth did hurt. The first time I went with "mamma Shieri" (the person at Asahi KASEI, which takes care of the foreigner workers) which helped me to communicate with the dentist.
At first I was worring a little, mainly because I do not know the language, so it's not easy communicate by myself with the dentist, but I soon understood that my poor knowledge of the Japanese language would be enough to undertsand wath the doctor was saying to me and he was going to do on my teeth.
In the end I found out that the dentist is very good and the service is quite cheeper, compared to priceses in Italy. For example, a "canal terapy" is around 7500 Yen, while in Italy the same terapy is around 250€ (and in that case you should consider yourself lucky).
I suggest the Italian living in Japan for a period at least longer than 2 month, to go dentist in Japan instead of suffering waiting to go back to Italy, where your favourite dentist will steal you lots of money and probably will let you feel lot of pain.

Domenica a Kamakura

ENGLISH:

Sunday in Kamakura

Last Sunday I went to Kamakura (鎌倉). Kamakura is a city in the Kanagawa prefecture and it is famous for it's temples and because it was also the capital of Japan during the Kamakura period. One of the main Attractions in Kamakura is the big Budda Statue (Daibutsu [だいぶつ]), whic is the biggest in Japan. It took around one hour and half to reach Kamakura from Atsugi. One's arrived we first visited a temple and then we had to have tempra and soba for lunch. After lunch we went to see the Daibutsu, and on the way to the big budda there were many people and many kids wearing kimono. In Kamakura there is a celebration every year for kids 3 and 5 years old, and that justifies the kids wearing kimono. Well, when I seen the budda I was not so excited, actually I thought it would be bigger, also because in Japan every people suggest to go to visit the Daibutsu and maybe for that reason my expetions about it were high.
By the way, it was a very nice day, and Kamakura is very pretty place, but never like Kyoto and Nikko.

Regalo dall' Italia

Grazie Marco

Gift From Italy

Today I recieved a gift from Italy, from the guy that was previously working on the Italian language model, and that recently left Japan. He sent it to me by a Japanese girl that we both know and that recently visited Italy. Well, Steve, the guy who Manami (to which I still have to say thank you), said to me that Marco sent me Nutella and Donuts (the oily American staff you can find, for example at Mc Donald's), which are everything but Italian. Well...when he gave me the bag I soon identified the nutella and the "Abbracci, Mulino Bianco", which are Italian cookies. They soon remembered me nice breakfasts in the Sunday morning, with a good big cup of hot milk (very nice in this cold season).
Well...what else?
Grazie mille Marco

iPhone and Japanese Language Learning

Shinkanji 2.0 for the iphone

Last week I bought the iPhone, and one of the reasons why I chose it is the fact that there many useful free apllication to study the Japanese language. In my cae I found vary useful the application with flashcards for the study of kanjis. A flash card is card (with similar size of a poker card) showing a kanji, together with it's meaning, pronunciation and the way it must be drawn. A good collection of flash cards for japanese kanjis come from white-rabbit-press and the version with the kanji for the JPTL4 costs around 22€. Following I will show the application I am using in the iphone.
1) Kotoba: is a multilingual Japanese dictionary for iPhone and iPod touch. The dictionary files are embedded in the application so that the dictionary service is avaliable at all times with no additional cost.
Kotoba! was created using the amazing JMdict files from the Electronic Dictionary Research and development group based on the work of Jim Breen on the EDICT project. Use Japanese keyboard to lookup words in kana/kanji. It's also possible to use the traditional Chinese character recognition to draw directly on the iphone screen the kanji you want to lookup.
2) wwwJDic: is an interface to access the web dictionary wwwJDic from the iphone. This application is sligtly similar to Kotoba with the difference that you need to acces the internet to use it and then you are probably going to pay for using it.
3) Shin-Kanji Lite: is an application to study kanjis by using flash cards on the iphone screen. It features a database of more than 7000 kanjis and it uses very useful animations to show how given kanji must be drawn. Moreover the kanjis are organized in different categories (for example the four JPLT levels) which makes straightforward the browsing of the database.

Well...this was a prove of how the iPhone is not just a fashion toy...

Finesettimana all' onsen

Yamashita prefecture (山梨県) is known for her natural hotsprings due mainly to the close mount Fuji (富士山). The panorama from the mount Kita (were hotsprings were located) was wonderful. It was possible to see all the Kanto area and if you consider that this was happeing while you relaxing in a outdoor onsen...well you can maybe guess how much it was wondeful.

My Job (Update 1)

Last Friday I recieved two news from my boss, and as usual, one is nice and one is not.
The good news is that the Italian model is working very good and the customers (mainly Nissan and Renault) are very happy about it. The bad news is that, since the Italian model is quite good now, I should stop working on the Italian model and start working in the German language one.
My first expression when my boss said that to me was: YADAAAAA!!!!
Then my boss esked me if I am was ok, and I answered that I just do not like German language. Then I said that I would work on it anyway and I will do best to improve that model too. And my boss said: "ganbatte ne!!".

ENGLISH:

My New Home

Today I will show something about my home in Japan.
Before I seen it, I thought it would be smaller then it actually is, but when I seen it I was soon positively impressed. Considering that Japanes houses are relatively small (especially compered to the Italian houses) and considering that I will leave by myself, I thing it is big enough. Inside I found almost everything I need, from the rise-cooker to the microwave. It is composed by the main room and a bathroom (including bathtub). The only thing I would like to be little bigger is the cooking area, but this little inconvenient can be noticed only by people who, same as I do, like too cook. One of the thing I will soon buy is a Japanese style table, mainly because when I invite someone, and I cook, is not nice too eat ont the floor.
To conclude, considering that the company is paying for the home and for all the expenses conected to it, well...I can only be happy.

My Job (part 1)

I came to Japan, in Hon-Atsugi to work for one year for Asahi KASEI Corporation. AK is a big Japanese company which started their businness in the area of chemistry and nowadays is producing almost everything.
I work as a researcher in the engeneering/Computer-Science area, and in particular I am part of the Multilingual Speech Recognition Group. To explain exactly wat I am doing would maybe need 3 posts, so I will only tell you that my task is to improve the performances (quality) of a speech recognition software produced by Asahi KASEI.
The working place is 22th floor of the Atsugi AXT main tower. It is the highest building in Atsugi, so you can see it from everywere (even from Yokohama's main building). I can go at work in 10 minutes by walk, since the building is quite close to the place where I stay.
The work is not hard (I mean not stressing) and all the people at the office are very nice and kind. I start working at 9am (I can also go at 10am, and leave one hour later then the normal working time) and at 12am we have lunch time break. For lunch I can go to buy something at konbini or caffetteria (しょくど) or I can go outside to buy bento from the bento-moving-shops on the street or go to some ramen shop close to the AXT.Moreover in the office we have microwave, coffee machine, tea, and many other things that you can have for free. Yesterday I prepared lunch for the lunch break and today I could eat it using microwave...it was quite fun.
At 1pm we restart working, and dunring the working time it is mandatory to take a 10 minutes break to take some rest (I think they are too kind). The work is never stressing we all of us help each ther when needed. I stop working at 5:45pm.
Usually after work I go for a walk at the center of Hon-Atsugi (12 minutes by walk from Youth Heim) just to take rest, or to buy something to cook for the dinner.

Viaggio

Lasciati i bagagli, via in ufficio a conoscere i miei nuovi colleghi.

•Daitarn 3 (sigla completa)•

UPDATE:

ENGLISH:

Last weekend I visited my aunt which lives close to Trento, and I went to visit them before I leave Italy.
In the early night, while I was working on the draft for the publication of my thesis work, I heard a very familiar song. The TV was showing an episode of Daitarn 3, which I cartoon that I was used to watch when I was child and I still like watching if I have the chance.
Daitarn 3 is an animated tv series of mecha-style robots, created by Yoshiuyuki Tomino (same creator of Gundam), and Kunio Okawara (which designed the mecha).
Same as "Goldrake" (UFOロボグレンダイザー) and "Il Grande Mazinga" (グレートマジンガ), and differently from mobile suite-style robots like Gundam, Daitarn never goes out of ammo or never finishs it's fuel, and it almost invicible.
I noticed how Daitarn 3 is almost unknown in Japan, while it is quite popular in Italy (it is also more popular than Gundam).
Why is that happening??
Well, I loved the idea of the megaborg transformations, and also the fact that Daitarn3 fights against his enemies using martial arts (in Mazinger and Goldrake there is almost no phisical contacts between robots, if it happened it was always using some weapon).
Another reason I think is the entering theme (the Italian one) of the anime.
I am sure every Italian knows it (at least the people that like me grown up between 80's and 90's).

By the way , I think is interesting to see how some ideas proposed by Tomino in Daitarn3 (which was concurrent of Go Nagai's robots) anitipated Gundam (created from Tomino just after Daitarn 3).

UPDATE:
I found the Japanese Opening....just take a look at it...

Io ho scelto 渡都 che dovrebbe significare qualcosa come "cosmopolita".

ENGLISH:

Hanko ready!!!

Finally I chose the hanko that I will use in Japan to put stamp in documents. The hanko is a personal stamp which is comparable to the way we use signature. It is usually composed by the Kanji of the family name and it has official and legal value.
In the case of foreigners, the hanko is not easy to create simply because foreign names are not easy (sometimes is impossible) to be represented using kanji. In my case, the internship coordinator asked me if she can use "toto" instead of Salvatore as my name, because Salvatore is quite hard to be represented by kanji. I answered yes, also because "Totò" is actually another way to say "Salvatore" (in Sicily, Totò is another way to call Salvatore) and many people call me Totò.
She sent me a list of 10 kanjis which sound is "to", and she asked me to choose the two kanjis that will compose my hanko.
I did choose 渡都, which meaning should be close to "cosmopolitan", and also because I liked the way those kanjis look. The choosing criteria were the meaning and/or the number of strokes of the kanjis.

What would you chose???

渡都

Permesso Internazionale Di Guida

International Driving Licence

Today I got the international driving license, so that I will be able to drive car in Japan if I will have the chance. Well, when I arrived to the "motorizzazione civile" to get the license I noticed they mistook the model of licence. so I had to wait (almost 15 minutes) until they made a new license that would valid to drive in Japan.
There are two versions of international driving license:
• "Vienna 1968" version which is valid for 10 years and do not allow to drive in Japan.
• "Ginevra 1949" version which is valid only for 1 year and it is valid to drive in Japan.
As you can easily guess, at first they gave me the "Vienna 1968" version which would be useless to me.
The driving license is actually just a document containing the translations of my Italian driving licence in many languages. My driving license includes Japanese, Greek, Duch, German, Spanish, English, Arab and French language translations. So I can use it in Japan, and I guess also in some African country, Latino America and some other conutry (I guess Vietnam too, since it includes French language translation).
It would be also possible take the driving license directly in Japan by going to an Italian consulate or at the Italian embassy in Tokyo. The Japanese Automobile Federation (JAF) prepared a page in Italian language which explains what to do to get the driving permission I am talking about.

I actually do not know if I will have the chance to drive in Japan, but if I would have the chance I would be happy to drive and so it's better to be ok with Japanese laws.

Volo prenotato!!!!

Booked!!!!

Today I finally booked the air ticket to fly to Narita. I will leave from Milano Linate airport to reach the Heathrow airport in London. From the main English airport I will fly to Narita just after a 40 minutes stop. As you can easily guess, I will fly with British Airways (obviously I did not wanted to use Alitalia now).
When I will arrive in Narita, I will directly go to Hon-Atsugi, where I will meet the internship coordinator which will probably take me to the new place I will live and then to meet my future colleghes.
Now I only have to buy health insurance, finish packing staff in my apartment, and then fly to the land of  the rising sun...

what else...I am genki-kun :-)

Just arrived and already leaving...

On Thuesday afternoon I arrived in Trento. In the morning I met some old friends in Catania. The trip was ok and when I arrived in Trento I was not too tired.
I must admit that I missed my room and also missed Trento somehow. On Friday I had lunch with Apo and Rox and I gave them the wine I bought in Sicily and some sweets.
In the afternoon I finally received the CoE with attached an invitation letter from Asahi KASEI. Those two documents are needed to obtain the visa from the Embassy or Japanese Consulate.
Now I have to leave to Milan to go the Japanese consulate and apply to obtain the VISA to work in Japan for one year.

Preparing to leave Sicily

Tomorrow I will leave Sicily to go back to Trento and I am going to start packing. Last 3 days were the best days I had in these two weeks in Sicily. Some old nice friend came to visit me last weekend and, last but not the least, I went to the beach last 3 days.
Last Saturday I went to visit Giovanni, one my old high school friends. He already has two child and was very nice that he is almost the same person I known almost 14 years ago.
On Sunday Fabio and Patrizia came to Licata to visit me. They leave close to Piazza Armenia, which is far from Licata almost one hour and half by car. She is medic since 3 month and he will be engineer next year. We went to the beach in Licata (at "Pisciotto") and was very nice to talk and remember the nice time we had togheter while I was living in Catania. We also remembered the nice trip we had togheter in London (almost 4 years ago).
During the weekend I also bought two pairs of shoes in a small shop in Palma Di Montechiaro (the town were I went for high school), and that fun somehow because I could not find anything I liked in Licata, which is bigger than Palma Di Montechiaro.
Now I only have to buy something to eat and some bottle of wine to bring with me in Trento for Apo and Rox.
I go back preparing the suitcase...

Learning Hiragana

ENGLISH:

Learning Hiragana

In these days I studied hiragana. To know this set of symbols is very important in Japanese language because all the Japanese words are written using hiragana and kanji symbols.
I studied hiragana after katakana and I must admit that it was harder to learn than katakana. As I did in the article about my studies of katakana, I attached a picture showing my little progresses in writing and learning hiragana symbols. I wrote my name in hiragana even if I know it does not make sense because my name is not Japanese and for that reason it should be written using katakana symbols.

Panorama

Well, I hope you like it and I hope I will have the chance to go to the beach again soon (I could not take any suntan because it was quite late)...

ciao ciao

CoE (Aggiornamento)

Ritorno a casa

The result was surpricing also for me. The speed with which I recognize the symbols and I read small word in katakana increased esponencially.
At the end I also tried writing my name and surname in katakana and even if the result is quite poor I am still proud of it.
Next step will be studying hiragana symbols, which are fundamental in Japanese language.

Yukata (how to wear it)

in costruzione....

ENGLISH:

Yukata (how to wear it)

To properly wear a yukata is not necessarily obvious. The left side of the yukata is wrapped over the right side (the reverse is to be avoided as only the dead at funeral wears the rigt over the left), and an obi is used to keep the yukata from falling open when worn in public. In private, as after a bath, the yukata is usually simply belted. Also, thonged wooden sandals called geta are usually worn with the yukata.

Amongst men, the most common use of yukata when out in public is when it is worn by sumo wrestlers. Junior ranked wrestlers are expected to wear yukata when out in public, irrespective of the weather conditions or time of the year.
During the summer all wrestlers tend to wear this attire.

Both men and women often wear yukata at traditional Japanese inns, especially ones with their own hot-spring baths. After checking in, people often change into a yukata provided by the inn. Many go for walks outside, to the public bath, and even to dinner and breakfast (taken in a communal dining room) in their yukata.

This post also contains a video that explains how to properly wear a yukata

Yukata

Yukata

Genta
Yukata (浴衣) is a Japanese summer clothing. People wearing Yukata are common sight at fireworks displays, and other summer events.
The yukata is a casual for of kimono that is also frequently worn after bathing at traditional Japanese inn.

To wear yukata you also need Obi and Geta.
The obi is a belt used in tradional Japanese clothing and it used to keep the kimono closed. Obi is also used to keep closed kimono used in the judo martial art.
Geta are wooden sandals usually worn with the yukata.

I have my own yukata and it composed as follows:
• Yukata (dark grey color)
• Obi (dark yellow color)
• Geta (dark yellow color)

When I will live in Japan I am sure I will have more chances to wear my Yukata, and I want you to that it is quite confortable to wear.
Wearing a yukata is not necessarily obvious so you will need someone to help you wearing it. I hope as soon as possible I will write a post about how to wear yukata.
